Helsinki: A former railway warehouse destroyed in a huge fire the night before. In the background is the Finnish Parliament House. (About the inferno: article / photos.)

Niklas, this photo is from before the fire, isn't it?

No, this is how it looked after the fire. Now it looks different again, since the building is being demolished.

I'm sorry such a beautiful old building was burned. Niklas, can they preserve any of it to attach to the new Music Hall as they had planned, or is it all destroyed?

I'm afraid some parts that were meant to be preserved were destroyed in the fire. The older (southern) wing of the building was mainly destroyed, while the fire didn't spread to the newer of the two wings.

Oh, after the fire? Well, after the fire, I would have expected it to be more black because of the soot.
And I agree with Ariel. It's a great building. I do not understand, why the planners initially (well, now after the fire it's a different story anyways) did not try keep more of these buildings. I know (and I admire it) that in Scandinavia - not only in Finland - modern architecture is at it's top, but why not combine old and new when it comes to buildings? I love that. But I know, that a lot of people do not like these combinations....

Quite a coincidence that I stumbled on your website. Was in Helsinki a couple of weeks ago and took the same picture because I was intrigued what it was. Of course, your shot is infinitely better than mine. :-)

Albert, wow, you've taken a lot of photos here! I'm glad you captured the blossoming cherry tree, since I missed it this year. :)

Yes, must say I quite like Helsinki. I have more pictures from previous trips if you're interested:
