Helsinki: The setting sun lights up the iconostasis (the wall of icons separating the nave from the sanctuary) of the Uspenski Cathedral, an orthodox church in the district of Katajanokka.

There is an excellent panorama view available showing the interior of the Uspenski Cathedral. Just left of the middle of the iconostasis, in the upper part, you can find the detail seen in my photo. (Note that you need QuickTime to be able to see the panorama.)

Well, well, what a surprise Niklas!!!
One of the many greek words used in other languages .
The correct word for it (as we call it in greek) is iconostasi, not iconostasis, because it's the iconostasi which is a neutral word meaning that it is not a feminine word, neither masculine one.So we call it "to iconostasi", meaning not only the wall of icons separating the nave from the sanctuary, but we also using it when we want to describe the same thing but smaller. For example a small corner in our house up on a shelf in which we have more than two Orthodox icons is called :"iconostasi".
Very nice, warm colouring photo with a very interesting aspect, as always Niklas :-)))

I lived in Finland for one year, a long time ago but it remains 'koti' in many ways. Your photos bring so much back. I especially appreciate the explanations of ephemera (icono ...) : no "some flower" or "some bug" descriptions here. Thank you ... every day, your photos bring me home, just a little.
