Helsinki: A sailing boat on the misty sea outside Kaivopuisto district. On the left is Harakka island and on the right the Uunisaari islands. Between them is a sound called Uuninsuu.

'Uuninsuu'? 'The mouth of the furnace'? That makes the picture even more supernatural-sounding (like something from Stephen King). Any idea why the island is called 'uuninsaari'?

Iain, you're right about the strange name. I'm afraid I don't know where the name comes from, but perhaps someone else knows?

The sound in the middle called Uuninsuu (as Iain pointed out: Mouth of the Furnace) can be seen in different conditions in three of my older photos: clear, storm, and winter.
What's interesting about these photos is the varying conditions at the same time during two different years. When you compare the first photo with the third one, you can see that in February 2005 the sea was all open, while in February 2006 (11 days later) it was deeply frozen and covered with footpaths.

Thanks, Nik. It's hard to believe from those four pictures that we're looking at the same place. Finland is indeed a country of extremes.

@Iain: Indeed it is, that makes Finnland such a fascinating country, to visit - and, I suppose, also to live in.
@ Niklas: wonderful photo again, very moody. And despite the fog, it does not look very cold.

I'm glad if it doesn't look cold, since it was quite pleasant. :)
