Märket, Åland Islands (Finland) / Sweden: Dark clouds above Märket lighthouse, part 4. My fourth day on the small lighthouse island in the Baltic Sea at the border between Finland and Sweden was dominated by spectacular cloud formations and extreme weather conditions from bright sunshine to heavy downpour and thunder.

I'm publishing this photo now because today exactly one year has passed since I was admiring this fascinating view on the small lighthouse island of Märket. Another reason for publishing the picture is that yesterday´s news (also see Reuters' video) told that the wreck of a Soviet submarine that sunk during Finland's winter war has been discovered by divers very close to Märket. The submarine was observed by the lighthouse guard of Märket in January 1940 just before it hit a mine killing all 50 crew members.

The Finnish Lighthouse Society is now renovating the unique Märket lighthouse for the third summer. You can read about the adventures on the small island in the Märket diary.

Mystérious, spectacular, a picturesque scenery dramatized by the threatening approach of the storm. We just wait for the arrival of a Nordic hero (from the Kalevala or other) in such a magical instant and place.
